Meet Dr Gunawardane
Doctor Nishanie Gunawardane (Dr. G) provides medication management for patients with mental illness and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) to treat alcohol and opioid addictions. Her approach to care is compassionate and patient-centered.
Approach to Care
Dr. G is genuinely interested in her patients’ life stories and struggles. She considers it an honor and privilege to help you improve your overall quality of life, succeed, and thrive. Treatment is not one-size-fits-all. Dr. G will get to know you and tailor your treatment plan for what works best for you. Often, that includes medication and therapy.
Dr G’s Education
Dr. G attended The State University of New York (SUNY), where she graduated with distinction in 2001, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) in Philosophy. She earned a Master of Arts degree (MA) in Religion from Columbia University in 2003 before going to medical school.
Residency & Fellowship
After graduate school, Dr. G studied medicine at The New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYIT/NYCOM), graduating in 2010 with her Doctor of Osteopathy degree. She completed her residency in General Psychiatry in 2014 at Zucker Hillside Hospital in Buffalo, NY. She remained at Zucker Hillside to complete a Fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry in 2015. In 2019, she became a fellow of the American Society for Addiction Medicine (FASAM). Dr. G is dual board-certified in General Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry.
